I was always terrible at getting out of bed. I tried some alarm clock apps that gave you challenges (solve a math problem, scan a barcode, etc). That worked until I realized I could just kill the app and stay in bed.
I realized I needed something outside of the app to push me. So I ended up building Nuj. https://nuj.app
It’s an alarm clock app that charges me $10 if I don’t get up and scan my toothpaste barcode within a 5 mins of my 7am alarm.
The alarms are stored in the cloud so if I kill the app or try to cheat, I still get charged the penalty. Also, alarms “lock” 1 hour before going off so I can’t turn off the alarm and stay in bed if I wake up before it goes off.
Brilliant idea, but I could see this being a pain if your mobile network is down. I suppose if you have both wifi and mobile data it's pretty unlikely that you won't be able to respond to the nudge in time
> They might need 4 separate alarm clocks in 3 different physical places in order to wake up on time every day
I don't know if I have ADHD, but I've always been terrible at getting out of bed.
It bugged me so much I ended up building an app[0] to force me to get up. If I didn't get up and scan my toothpaste barcode within a few mins of my alarm, I'd have to pay $10.
It also has cheat detection so I can't just turn off the phone to avoid getting up. Alarms are stored in the cloud and lock 1 hour before going off so they can't be changed.
Many of my users tell me they have ADHD so it seems likely I fall somewhere on the spectrum.
Looks great! I’ll probably use it just for the chapters alone. Huberman lab only has “clickable” YouTube but I find I end up getting distracted while I’m on there. This is way better.
Unrelated: I noticed you’re not using the App Store banner on your landing page. Why is that? Difficulty tracking conversions?
Thanks, I really appreciate all the positive replies.
Mostly they have been arms length connections - intros from people I know. Tbh, so far minimal pushback due to the (relatively) warm nature, and in their profession (healthcare) they are clear value in the value being provided. The TestFlight system is actually reasonably easy.
While the private beta idea is good for today, plan to move past it once I validate a few more parts. There’s no fomo/network effects at play.
