Discovered this app a year ago and love it. Use it almost everytime I'm out on a walk or a bike ride. Glad to see it's getting some love here. I echo the sentiments of another commenter that said it's the shining example of what "a computer in everyone's pocket" could have been.
And what did folks try and do in the sequel? Attempt to do a s*t-ton of moon landings!! Best commentary on the nature of humanity in any work of fiction since the Bible.
I remember finding this series greatly engrossing, including 2061 and 3001, when I read them at age 12 or so. I wonder now if I should attempt re-reading. My only worry is that it'll take me until the year 2061 at the amount of free time I have today :(
I loved that show. I've struggled to explain to my teenage kids what the show was about and the appeal of it .. they don't get it. I used to tape it to VHS and still have said tapes in my loft, they haven't been played back since the late 90s. I dawned on me how much culturally significant material is probably on those tapes, down to the adverts and little MTV idents and the odd music video. I really must get round to getting them digitised.
Yes. I don't know if it's on a vaslty bigger scale, according to this they spent $220m in operating expenses: http://www.npr.org/about/statements/fy2015/NPR_Consolidated_..., compared to about £90m for R4. Before brexit they would be pretty comparable ;).
