I think a big reason people don't report bugs is they've come to expect that nothing will come of it. For instance, there are major bugs with Quickbooks' multi-currency support that I have reported repeatedly over the course of years, with detailed steps to reproduce, and received not so much as a reply let alone a fix. On the other side, any time someone reports a bug on one of our websites, they seem positively shocked when we answer and usually are able to fix it that same day. (We have also found, as with the OP, that bugs can affect a lot of users before one will send a message, so we definitely do try to catch as much with testing and code review as possible!)
