Has anyone noticed this before? HN: Best Of (news.ycombinator.com)

Anyone aware of "easter egg" links on HN - something not listed in the "lists"?

Well, there's http://news.ycombinator.com/classic though it's not really a list, more of an alternate front page.

the lists page is not listed on the lists page

I actually caught myself checking your username to see if it was "Russell" (ref: Russell's paradox, regarding the set of all sets containing itself :-)

offers used to exist but it seems it died some months ago

I remember pg saying that offers was pasted directly into the HN REPL and was only an experiment to see if it was popular enough to stick around. Guess it wasnt and offers was lost the next time the server rebooted.[1]

And there was also a /offerless![2]

If this link gets upvoted enough it will be on the best of list, and then we won't forget about it...

All the articles listed there have been in the last few weeks. It would be nice to see an all time best of list.

Maybe look at the upvotes vs registered users at the time? That way an article way back with 100 upvotes would be able to compete with a current one with 500.

This is nice, but it would be really nice if the scores could be normalized against the mean of the top 10 front page scores on the date submitted (or some such). pg, would this be possible?

I can't remember what the "over=value" filter was, and haven't had much luck in guessing it. Anyone know it off-hand? It's not on the lists page.

I used to use news.ycombinator.com/best , but I now follow HN using Jeff Miller's RSS feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/newsyc100

Pros: I never miss anything. Google Reader keeps track of what I already read.

Cons: It's hard to keep up with all the articles!

Jeff created RSS and Twitter feeds for 20+, 50+, 100+, and 150+ karma submissions.

Meh... It's really just "recent popular hn articles."

I use this script: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/58915

Thanks to pwlin for making this script

It's been there for about a week IIRC.

Edit: well, it looks like the link is not always present. Is it being A/B tested or something?

It's always been there. well, for many months at least.

I suspect it's easier for pg to implement features than to introduce and document them, and there's not really an obvious place to find them. That is, not unless you want to dive into the source.

I'm surprised there aren't more 'hidden features of HN' blogposts floating around. If anybody wants a quick and honest way to slurp up some karma, they should write one.

Actually, this is really old[1] but gets reported all the time by noobs.

why there's no menu link for this?

There is. Look at the top of the main page.

The link is only there when you're on the page. It's not much use if you need to know the page URL in advance for the link to appear.

great!
