The Metaverse sounds like a protocol for VR/AR worlds, but I don’t think I read there is any consortium working on such an open protocol. Unless such a protocol already exists?


It was called VRML[0] and was superseded by X3D[1]

The article mentions a (discontinued) 3d browser, which would be a necessity probably for any type of metaversial web.


This reminds me of Adobe Atmosphere (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Atmosphere), which I greatly miss. It was a highlight of my early 2000s.


I remember that! I loved using an avatar that looked like a bush and then hiding in plain sight.
