You joke, but before powerful particle accelerators, physicists really did just lift detectors higher into the atmosphere—either on planes or by carrying them up very tall mountains.
I know of some high altitude balloon and satellite experiments as well. I guess size and weight are a limiting factor to what one can detect with those.
