Well this would then be one of the subsidies that actually works well and is value for people in Europe.

In Switzerland the drop in quality of the railway system has been eminently observable over the last 5-10 years, the railway company has basically 0 accountability in terms of delays and botched repair/expansion and unlike airway the quality drop after Covid has not recovered. And that is for what I would consider a Top 3 railway system in Europe, the rest are mostly worse.

Also, 29% increase over a decade in greenhouse emissions is 2.5% a year, I'll take that any day of the week given that air travel has gotten better over the last 10 years. If somebody is going to be emitting CO2 it should be the most efficient industries.

I hate air travel. It's gotten considerably worse and more expensive over just the last 10 years. I wish there were real alternatives available; I would honestly pay the same as a flight ticket for a ship to cross the Atlantic if it took less than 2 days and it meant I get to stretch my legs a little.

Same for taking a train. Recently searched for Seattle to LA, it takes 30h on Amtrak compared to a 2h30m flight and it costs twice as much (I'm sure if I wanted to book the flight in advance it would've been even cheaper to fly).

Sounds like a decision of governments in order to penalise travelling and reduce greenhouse emissions.

Stay at home policy, but they are too shy to tell us.
