Facebook serves a different need, and for me, was never the default place for event information. Up until the last 5-10 years we were always using email mailing lists, web forums, usenet, or IRC.

Well nobody sane at least. Seriously, IRC was always an informal sideshow to the asynchronous mechanisms.
