I'll leave my chat program open for two weeks and it says the message was received 'yesterday', even though it was actually two weeks ago but hasn't updated because it's just been sitting there idle. Anything other than the actual timestamp is utterly useless.
That particular point is an implementation issue, however. There are web forums I frequent where the time indications update in realtime while the page is just sitting there.
