Not only for drudgery. If you read good research in CS(even for varied fields like anonimity,protocol design,type analysis which usually have nothing to do with machine learning), machine learning have become really core to many of them.

To some extent it even seems like the job of the humans is to do the wiring , while the machine learning does the thinking , even in leading edge research.
